DUMBO's current vitality is very much a function of its rich and varied cultural offerings. In the 1980’s & 1990’s artists and designers flocked to DUMBO to take advantage of the loft warehouse spaces and artists' effectively transformed the neighborhood. Today, world-class visual and performing artists, art organizations, galleries, theater companies, and designers, continue to live and/or work in DUMBO. Over the last few years the cultural presence in the area has grown tremendously. Myriad of galleries, performance spaces, and artists' studios have opened and are attracting visitors and critical attention. The umbrella organization Arts at St. Ann's moved into DUMBO during the fall of 2001 and has presented such illustrious musical acts as David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and, the Tindersticks, in the last year alone. Dance and theater companies who've made the Warehouse their New York home include the Elizabeth Streb Dancers, the Builders Association, the Ridge Theater, and the Wooster Group. In November and December of 2002, St. Ann's drew crowds from far and wide for Estelle Parsons' acclaimed production of Oscar Wilde's Salome. Al Pacino, Marisa Tomei and Dianne Weist led the cast. During the week-end long DUMBO Arts Festival each fall, thousands of visitors descend on district to take advantage of the 200-plus arts events that occur, both indoors and outdoors. The summer film series in Empire State-Fulton Ferry Park along the shores of the East River is an equally popular attraction. Additionally, DUMBO is well on its way to becoming a night destination with unique spaces offering varied programs to suite every lifestyle. One visit to DUMBO and it quickly becomes apparent thst there is always something going on be it a theater performance, concert, gallery opening, outdoor film screening, an impromptu sidewalk performance of an outdoor art installation. And of course, the view of Manhattan is an awe inspiring work of art in itself.
